Folk calendar
Mark Klyuchnik
On this day, the memory of Mark is celebrated – the apostle of the seventy, the faithful companion of Saints Paul and Barnabas.
People called Mark the Keymaker, because there was a belief: it was this saint who kept the keys with which he could unlock the sky and release the rains. Therefore, on this day they prayed to him that there would be no drought.
They used the precipitation to guess the future. They said: “If three good rains fall in May, then there will be enough grain for three years.” At the same time, a clear day on Mark promised a good spring harvest.
Mark Klyuchnik Day was also called a bird holiday. At this time, the birds returned to their native lands in whole flocks. The peasants went out into the hemp fields in the morning and looked: if birds fly at them, the harvest of this plant will be good. In this case, they scattered hemp seeds around the yard for domestic and visiting birds. Also on this day we went to catch siskins.
This day was associated with certain field crops. So, they said: “A Tatar is sown on St. Mark” (buckwheat was called Tatar).
