Krasnoyarsk doctors have found a new way to restore memory after a stroke

A team of rehabilitation specialists from Krasnoyarsk Hospital No. 20 named after. I.S. Berzona invented and patented a new way to restore memory and attention in people who have suffered a stroke. This was reported by the regional Ministry of Health.
Doctors suggest teaching patients with mild to moderate thinking and memory problems to read using the Braille system, a tactile alphabet usually used by the blind.
A person with normal vision first memorizes the 11 most common letters of the alphabet by touch, using his vision, and then learns to read short words of three to nine letters with his fingers without visual control. The entire course takes nine days, daily classes last 25-30 minutes. They are carried out by a speech therapist and a neuropsychologist. You can practice both in the clinic and at home.
The idea was submitted by the head of the early rehabilitation department, neurologist Sergei Kabysh. The technique was developed together with medical speech therapist Sofia Vorona.
“The brain after a stroke needs to build new neural connections. Learning to read Braille is a powerful mental workout that engages the senses of touch, memory and attention at the same time. We don’t treat vision, we restore brain function,” said the doctor.
Sergei Kabysh discussed his idea with Professor Semyon Prokopenko, who oversees rehabilitation throughout the Siberian Federal District. The technique was approved, finalized and patented as a new way to help patients after a stroke.
Now this approach is being used in the rehabilitation department of hospital No. 20, and is also being studied as part of the candidate’s thesis of a graduate student at the Krasnoyarsk Scientific Center.
