Bolojan's nuance about the possibility of returning to government: “Not under any conditions”

“A party always wants to be in government to be able to do something, but not under any conditions,” said PNL leader Ilie Bolojan, a day after the party decided to go into opposition in response to the PSD-AUR no-confidence motion that dismissed the government led by him.

“We are not people who give up,” said Ilie Bolojan, on Wednesday, in the Observator show from Antena 1.

Asked what the conditions are for the PNL to sit down with the PSD for a possible government, the leader of the liberals emphasized that “you can't go forward with partners you no longer trust.”

“I would give you an example, a metaphor, not the one with rats. Imagine that you are associated with someone in a private company and your associate works behind your back, cheats you, brings invoices to the accounting department, etc. Surely, in this situation, a rational person would do another business with that associate? He wouldn't, because he knows the same thing will happen”, added Ilie Bolojan.

“There is no longer a basis of trust between PNL and PSD for a coalition”

The PNL leader said that “for nine months” he chose not to react publicly to the criticism coming from the PSD, trying to smooth out the differences in the coalition “in private discussions”.

“I tried in private discussions, I tried to correct things, I tried to put the spotlight on, thinking that people understand, it doesn't work the way it used to, just for Romania to work, for the government to work. In this situation, there is no longer a basis of trust between PNL and PSD to be able to form a coalition. This is the finding after months, and there is a stable majority in the National Liberal Party that believes this,” continued Ilie Bolojan.

The Bolojan government was dismissed on Tuesday by the PSD-AUR censure motion. After the vote, in a meeting lasting more than five hours, the PNL leadership voted unanimously for the party's entry into the opposition. A group from the leadership, including Cătălin Predoiu, left the room before the vote.

USR also held a meeting on Tuesday evening, and the president of the party, Dominic Fritz, announced that the formation will continue to support Ilie Bolojan, and will have a discussion with the PNL leader “about how we can coordinate our steps in this crisis”.
