Arsenal or Atletico Madrid » Who goes to the final of the Champions League
The first leg in Madrid a week ago ended in a 1-1 draw, with both goals coming from the penalty spot. Viktor Gyokeres put the Gunners ahead late in the first half and Julian Alvarez restored parity in the 56th minute, with qualification to be decided at the Emirates on Tuesday night.
Arsenal have shown exceptional strength this European season. The team first won their only group with 24 points, having won 8 from as many games, and then in the knockout stages, Mikel Arteta's men initially got past German side Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16 of the competition, and then eliminated Sporting Lisbon.
Atletico Madrid, for its part, even if it needed to play in the play-offs, finishing in 14th place in the initial phase, eliminated Club Brugge, then easily passed Tottenham, and in the quarter-final phase it managed to eliminate Barcelona, after a crazy “double”, with a lot of drama.
Arsenal still remember their elimination at the same stage of the competition to the Spaniards, but in the Europa League in 2018, when Atletico progressed after a 1-1 draw in London and a 1-0 win in Madrid.
However, in more recent history, the advantage is with the English. In the Champions League group stage, Arsenal crushed Atletico 4-0 at the Emirates, where qualification for the finals of the competition will be decided.
This is Arsenal's fourth Champions League semi-final, having only reached the final once in 2006. It is Atletico Madrid's eighth appearance at this level, reaching the final three times without ever lifting the trophy.
Arsenal will approach the return leg in excellent form after beating Fulham 3-0 in the Premier League at the weekend. In the last five matches, the Londoners have recorded two wins, two draws and only one defeat, against Manchester City.
Atletico Madrid also warmed up for the return with a win, beating Valencia 2-0 in La Liga. Madrid's form in the last five games is identical to that of their opponent: two wins, two draws and one defeat.
How the two coaches prefaced the return from London
We will be like beasts in the field. We will enjoy every moment and try to make the most of our chance. I can't wait for this day. I feel the energy in the team and among the fans. It's a moment we want to live together.
We have worked hard as a team and as a club to get back to this position after 20 years. We are ready to qualify for the final.
Our fans look forward to these evenings. It is hard to explain our desire to live such a moment with our supporters. Let's step on the pedal, because something incredible is going to happen
– Mikel Arteta, Arsenal coach
No matter how much we coaches think, football is about the players. We can manage their emotions. Experience and time gives you more composure, not passivity, and the peace of mind you need to face these matches.
What I notice is that people are always looking for an unusual title before a semi-final. But, it's simple, whoever plays better and maximizes their strengths will be closer to victory
– Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid coach
