Israel attack in Lebanon. Media: the army used phosphorus bombs

The correspondent of “L'Orient-le-Jour” Mountasser Abdallah reported that Israeli troops attacked Majdal Zun, Kafra and Kabricha. In Kunin and Beit Jahun, the army used phosphorus ammunition.

In turn, Hezbollah reported shelling a group of Israeli troops in southern Lebanon. The Israeli army confirmed this attack on the X platform, but without providing details about the effects. In the same message, she added that her soldiers fired on buildings from which, according to their assessment, Hezbollah members were attacking.

The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon entered into force on April 16, 2025. The parties reached it with American mediation. On the night of April 23-24, 2025, US President Donald Trump announced an extension of the truce by three weeks. Just a few hours after this statement, another exchange of fire took place between the Israeli army and Hezbollah.

White phosphorus and accusations against Israel

White phosphorus ignites on contact with oxygen, causing deep and difficult-to-heal burns, respiratory tract damage and fires. Human Rights Watch has previously reported on Israel's repeated use of these munitions over densely populated areas of Lebanon.

The Convention on Conventional Weapons prohibits the use of white phosphorus in populated areas. Israel is not a party to this convention. Previously, the country was accused of using phosphorus ammunition in the Gaza Strip in 2009 and in Lebanon in 2023-2024.

During the operation against Hezbollah that has been ongoing since March, Israeli troops have occupied southern Lebanon and are seeking to create a buffer zone there. It is intended to protect the north of Israel against attacks by this organization. Despite the formal ceasefire, the use of phosphorus ammunition and the growing number of victims indicate an escalation that the current agreement has not stopped.
