Krasnoyarsk summer residents were given advice on how to evaluate the quality of seedlings

Employees of the regional Rosselkhoznadzor have prepared recommendations on how not to make a mistake in choosing seedlings and planting them correctly.
When examining a seedling with an open root system, it is important that the roots are at least 20-25 centimeters long, they grow in all directions, are not damaged and are light in color. For a seedling in a container, healthy-colored roots should be visible through the holes. In addition, they must be elastic and not break when bent. You can take the plant by the trunk, lift it along with the container and shake it slightly – nothing will happen to a high-quality seedling.
The buds of a good tree will be alive and swollen, but the leaves should not be loose, otherwise the plant will quickly lose moisture.
Particular attention should be paid to age. It is best to buy apple and pear seedlings that are two years old, and plum, apricot and cherry seedlings that are one year old. Some gardeners choose the tallest trees in the hope that they will grow faster and begin to bear fruit, but this is wrong. Not only will they not begin to bear fruit earlier, but they will also lag behind younger plants in development. Adult seedlings have already formed a powerful root system that cannot be dug up without damage. For example, in three-year-old trees, about 80% of the roots remain in the ground, and the remaining part is not able to fully nourish the tree.
The landing site should be sunny, protected from the wind, without high groundwater levels. The apple tree prefers fertile loamy or sandy soils with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction, the pear prefers loose fertile soil, loam or chernozem. Plum loves air- and water-permeable soils with a good humus layer, while cherries love loose fertile loams.
When marking a planting site, you need to take into account the size of an adult plant. For example, apple tree seedlings are planted no closer than three meters from buildings or other trees. The planting pit is prepared in advance, filled with mineral and organic fertilizers, and drainage made of crushed stone, expanded clay or gravel is laid at the bottom.
