The reduction of the American military contingent in Germany will be larger than previously announced. US President Donald Trump made this clear at a briefing in Palm Beach (Florida).
The day before, the Pentagon announced that the United States would withdraw 5 thousand military personnel from Germany, where its largest European base is located.
Trump indicated that this was about more people.
“We will significantly reduce their number, and the reduction will be much more than 5 thousand,” he said.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius previously called the Pentagon's decision “expected”, noting that Germany is expanding its armed forces from the current 185 thousand to 260 thousand people.
NATO spokeswoman Alison Hart said the alliance is now working with the United States to “understand the details of their decision.”
