The number of Bashkirs and Tatars killed in Ukraine exceeds all Soviet losses in the Afghan war – BBC

Two Russian regions—Bashkortostan and Tatarstan—lead in the number of confirmed deaths in the war against Ukraine. According to the BBC Russian Service, at least 18,000 people from these regions died in Ukraine.

“Over the past two weeks, Bashkortostan has surpassed the bar of 9,500 military deaths in Ukraine, and Tatarstan – 8,000. The confirmed losses of these two regions alone (18,116 people) are already 20% higher than all Soviet losses during the 10-year war in Afghanistan (according to official data, just over 15 thousand people died there),” the publication writes.

Taking into account the density of the male population, the leaders are Tuva, Buryatia and Altai. According to the publication’s calculations, for men from these regions the likelihood of being on the death list is 20–30 times higher than for Muscovites.

In total, journalists were able to identify the names of 216,205 Russian military personnel who died during the full-scale war against Ukraine. Over the past two weeks, the list has been replenished with 4,600 names. This is a higher average rate of increase in deaths than last year.
