At the end of last week, Toulouse was the scene of a unique worldwide initiative which highlighted the partnership between the local women's football and rugby teams of the city.
Within just 24 hours, the two teams played in the same stadium and wore the same kit in domestic competitions.
Show in Toulouse, with football and rugby teams in the foreground
The first team in action was the Toulouse football team on Saturday, April 25, in their Ligue 1 clash with Monaco at the Stadium de Toulouse. The game counting for stage #31 of the French first league ended in a draw, score 2-2, after coming back from 0-2 down and snatching the equalizer in the last seconds of the encounter.
A day later, on Sunday, at the same stadium, the city's rugby team played in the Top 14 against Clermont. The rugby players wore exactly the same equipment that their colleagues from the football section had, the day before.
However, the scenario was completely reversed in rugby in terms of the result. The leader Toulouse seemed to be in authoritative control of the duel with Clermont after leading 21-0, but the visitors managed a remarkable comeback and surprisingly prevailed on the leader's court, 27-24.
Unique project in Toulouse
The double sports event was intensively promoted by both clubs in the last days, and the distinctive element of the project was the fact that the athletes of the two teams performed in identical equipment.
The initiative is a world first, as there has not been a similar partnership between two elite clubs from different sports until now, according to rugbyromania.ro.
The official launch of the project that united rugby and football under the same concept took place at Toulouse City Hall, in an event attended by Didier Lacroix, president of Stade Toulouse, Olivier Cloarec, head of Toulouse FC, as well as the city councilor, Jean-Luc Moudenc. The message sent by the organizers was a suggestive one: “Those who are similar, gather.”
For this special occasion, the rugby team temporarily left their usual arena, the Ernest Wallon, a stadium with a capacity of around 20,000 spectators, where they currently play their home games. In the last weekend, he performed at the Toulouse Stadium, the host of the joint event.
