Tudor Chirilă, conclusion in the political crisis: “Maybe Romania needs to get its head together for good”

The artist and activist Tudor Chirilă published, on Monday evening, a long message in which he comments on the developments of the government crisis, which escalated with the PSD-AUR announcement regarding the submission of a joint censure motion. He has a bleak conclusion: “Maybe Romania needs to go headfirst for the world to really see what austerity and tax increases will look like.”

“I am not indignant. What I said a long time ago was confirmed. AUR equals PSD. Their anti-system fight never existed. There was only hatred and division that they built and fueled in its name”, wrote Tudor Chirilă, in the post on his Facebook page.

His extremely critical message to the Social Democratic Party.

“PSD undoubtedly represents, starting from the time of the FSN, the expression of the devastation of this country, the main reason why five million Romanians left the country, they are the executioner to which the people always return, nostalgic, lured by the increases in salaries and pensions from loans whose interest will be paid by their children, loans from which they receive little, and the big swindlers live well in Monaco, London or elsewhere”, says the artist.

“This party reached over 30 percent in polls precisely in the ANTI-SYSTEM rhetoric (author's emphasis, no). And what better example of a corrupt system that has held back an entire country for years, that has hijacked justice by changing laws and the criminal code, than the PSD?”, Tudor Chirilă also says.

He also explains that he is not an “Ilie Bolojan fan”.

“I didn't dedicate odes to him and I wouldn't give him blank checks. On the other hand, artists and concert organizers pay with the biggest increase in VAT (12%), culture pays with underfunding, education as well, I was against the merging of the few art schools and with other measures that targeted disadvantaged categories and where we hoped that nuance could be achieved,” the activist said.

“Can someone tell me about a single government or a prime minister who had the political will to at least start the discussion about the “smart guys in energy” or when, in which government, there was talk about the state companies that have been insolvent for years? When were eloquent figures communicated for the sinecuristic slander that these companies maintain? I didn't go crazy to bite that mess with “we don't sell our country” when exactly The PSD sold this country for nothing, with dubious, poorly negotiated or downright questionable privatizations”, Tudor Chirilă also claimed.

Tudor Chirilă's conclusion and a forecast about the new government

The artist tries to foresee what the next coalition that will support the Executive will look like and makes a prediction about the “real government” that will follow.

  • Whether PSD will be engorged by AUR or will merge with it remains to be seen, let's not forget that PSD has dropped in the polls, but he is the real winner of the 2024 local elections with the most town halls and county councils. What's really important is that the corrupt boys are safe again. It will either be a PSD-AUR alliance, or a government with an obedient prime minister who will imitate the reform. And maybe Romania needs to go headfirst for the world to really see what austerity and tax increases will look like.
  • And let's be serious, the real government will be AUR with the PSD and the corrupt wing of the PNL, those who make deals under the table with the PSD, that, no, corruption kills, but also unites, even on the table. And this is a lesson for Bolojan, it is not enough to do your job in your square when you are part of a corrupt party, it is important to fight for the cleanliness of your party in time, sometimes it is too late. I don't worry, someone like Predoiu will fall on his feet.

Criticism of the president as well

In the same post, Tudor Chirilă also criticized the president Nicușor Dan.

The artist, who in the election campaign positioned himself as one of the most vocal supporters of Nicușor Dan, accused the head of state of indirectly favoring the PSD in the current political crisis, invoking equidistance.

According to Tudor Chirilă, Nicușor Dan “managed to brilliantly play the PSD games” and that, “in the name of equality”, he became “a player president, a player for the PSD”.

“Mr. Nicușor Dan, you should know that the votes of the six million Romanians were not votes for formal equidistance, but for values such as the rule of law, anti-corruption fight, institutional reform, economic pragmatism, change of mentality, honest Romania,” Chirilă wanted to convey to the president.

PSD-AUR joint censure motion

Former Deputy Prime Minister Marian Neacșu announced on Monday, in a joint conference with the leader of the AUR senators, Petrișor Peiu, that the PSD will initiate, together with the party led by George Simion, a motion of censure against the Government led by Ilie Bolojan.

The two politicians were asked if this can be considered a first step for a collaboration in government as well.

“Any road starts with the first step. For now, we are facing this step,” said Neacșu.

Later, the PSD president, Sorin Grindeanu, insisted that there is no post-motion political agreement with the AUR, and the support of the censure motion by the two parties is a parliamentary move.

As for him, the leader of AUR, George Simion, said on Monday, shortly after the announcement made by Neacșu and Peiu, that he will submit the motion if he collects 233 signatures, the number of votes needed to bring down the Bolojan government. Simion did not rule out a government with the PSD.

“We are willing to ensure any government that can generate fair elections. We did not have fair elections in 2024 and 2025. Dan has not done his duty, he has not presented any report on the annulment of the elections. The first step we are taking to achieve our political goals is to pass this no-confidence motion. Let's see that everyone keeps their word,” said the president of the AUR, in a conference in press.

And on Monday evening, Dan Dungaciu, the first vice-president of the AUR, explained that the overthrow of the Bolojan Government through a vote in Parliament is the first step for triggering early elections.

“We believe that early elections are the solution to the repeated and overlapping crises in which Romania finds itself today. Tactically speaking, the no-confidence motion is a step. (…) This fall of the Bolojan Government is a step towards anticipation. (…) The only way out of this crisis is early elections,” declared number 2 in AUR, to Euronews Romania.
