AC Milan midfielder Luka Modric (40) suffered a fractured left zygomatic bone and will undergo surgery. The Croatian collided head-on with Manuel Locatelli and was substituted towards the end of the match against Juventus (0-0).

What seemed like just a scare turned into a very worrying scenario for Luka Modric. The Croatian midfielder had to leave the field at “San Siro” on Sunday, in the 80th minute of the duel with Juventus (0-0) in the 34th round.

He became involved in an aerial duel for the ball and was not noticed by Manuel Locatelli, both of whom fell to the ground and required medical attention for several minutes.

Modric will wear a protective mask when he returns to the pitch

He was very dizzy and came off the turf with a large ice pack over his left eye. The Croat's bruised area swelled, he went to hospital last night and today, following thorough medical examinations, he found out that he has a fractured zygomatic bone and is very likely to miss the rest of the season.

In an official statement, Milan clarified the situation: “The tests carried out revealed a fracture of the left zygomatic bone, which will require a surgical intervention, scheduled for the next few hours. More details will be communicated after the operation.”

The news quickly reached Croatia as well, with fans anxiously awaiting news of Zlatko Dalic's national team captaincy. With a month and a half left until the start of the World Cup, Modric has little time to recover and return to normal training. It is to be expected that the Croatian midfielder to have to wear a protective mask after returning to the pitch.
