On this day, the memory of the martyr Thomaida of Egypt is celebrated, who gave her life for the faith in 476.
On Thomaida, people went into the forest to collect lungwort, which they used to brew teas and prepare salads. Surprisingly, people believed that bees could fly seven miles around this fragrant flower.
In Rus', it was customary for the most experienced housewife in the house to take care of the lungwort. And so that the bear, who was credited with dislike for the weaker sex, would not recognize her as a woman, she wore a sheepskin coat with the fur turned outward.
Also on this day it was possible to pick the first shoots of sorrel, which were placed in salads and cabbage soup. Monastic cabbage soup, which in addition to sorrel included parsley, onions, potatoes and butter, was especially tasty in the spring.
