Intervention at a treatment center in Eforie Nord, where 13 people felt sick after entering the pool / The police opened a criminal case

At least 13 people complained of feeling ill on Saturday, after being at the therapeutic pool of a medical center in Eforie Nord, and the intervention of the medical teams was requested. Two of the people required transportation to the hospital. The head of Constanța Consumer Protection later announced that he went to check the treatment center and discovered that “the most serious deficiency was in the water level in the pool, where the pH was below the allowed limits”. The County Police announced in turn that a criminal case was opened in this case.
“Persons feeling sick after a treatment in the therapeutic pool at a medical center in Eforie Nord”, initially announced ISU Dobrogea. Also, a DSP Constanța team was sent to check the medical center.
Later, the firefighters informed that, following a call to 112, “around 11:00, we were asked to intervene in the Eforie Nord resort, at a treatment center, where several people in the area of the therapeutic pool were complaining of being sick”.
They stated that following the on-site evaluation by the doctor from the SMURD C crew, 13 people were assisted, two of whom were transported to the Constanța County Hospital, with SMURD and SAJ ambulances.
Consumer Protection, in control. What was found
The head of the County Commissariat for Consumer Protection (CJPC) Constanţa, Horia Constantinescu, said on Saturday evening that he did a check at the treatment center in Eforie Nord and discovered that “the most serious deficiency was in the water level in the pool, where the pH was below the allowed limits”, reports News.ro.
“Once they arrived at this center, both the swimming pool area and the SPA center, as well as the food block, were checked. Deficiencies were found at the level of both structures, the most serious being identified at the level of the water in the pool. The pH level was below the permitted limits, with consequences that can generate irritation at the level of the throat, just as the affected people accused,” said Constantinescu.
He specified that DSP Constanța had previously been in control, who had decided to stop the activity at the pool until the presentation of analysis reports.
“Highly acidic pool water”
Horia Constantinescu added that there are some aspects that require additional clarification. “The frequency of pool water checks, the date of the last revision of the filtration system, as well as the operation of the automatic monitoring system, both in terms of the amount of chlorine and the other substances necessary to ensure a proper balance, will be clarified.”
“Also, the economic operator was asked to revise the entire gutter system, to clean the shower area and to remove including the areas affected by mold or other impurities”, the head of the CJPC sent.
He specified that no major deficiencies were found at the level of the food block, remedial measures being ordered.
The head of the Constanța CJPC mentioned that a pH of 4.2 in a swimming pool means strongly acidic water, being a completely inappropriate value for use, and a correct range for the pool is between 7.2 and 7.6.
Horia Constantinescu stated that a pH of 4.2 represents a severe deviation, comparable to acidity close to juices or diluted vinegar, and this has an impact on health through eye and skin irritation, burning sensation, damage to the nose and throat.
The police opened a criminal case
Also, the Police Inspectorate of Constanţa County announced that a criminal case was opened in this case.
“In the case, a criminal file was drawn up, the investigations being continued by the police to establish the exact causes and circumstances in which the event occurred”, the police stated.
