There are still a few days until, on May 7, we will celebrate 40 years since Steaua lui Jenei, Balint, Lăcătuș or Boloni won the European Champions Cup. The National Bank decided to celebrate the moment with a special silver and tombac numismatic issue. The CCE winners would participate in an event organized by the BNR
On May 7, it will be 40 years since Steaua won the European Champions Cup, the greatest achievement in the history of Romanian football.
It is the occasion when the authorities are preparing a series of events to mark the anniversary moment. But one of the initiatives will have a special character and comes from the National Bank of Romania.

Thus, the BNR decided to issue a special series of coins dedicated to the triumph of the red-blues four decades ago. “There will be a tombac coin and a silver one, with the coat of arms of the Star from that time and the stylized Champions Cup. For now, we do not know the exact prices nor the circulations, which we will communicate in the coming days”, Dan Suciu, the spokesperson of the BNR, pointed out for GSP.
The tombac coin could cost around 100 lei, and the silver one about 200-300 lei, depending on the weight used.

Also, the former members of Stella would participate in an event organized at the BNR headquarters in honor of those who brought the Champions Cup to Bucharest.

The NBR periodically releases notable numismatic issues. And among the latest initiatives were:
– “Romanian Coins” series (March 2026) – silver reproduction of the 5 lei coin (1880, Charles I), in a limited edition of 1,000 pieces – price: 800 lei (without VAT)

– the series “History of Gold” (2025) – “Germisara votive plaques” (face value – 10 lei), limited edition 1,000 pieces – price: 1,500 lei (without VAT)
– the show “Centenary of the Romanian Patriarchate” (2025) – set of 3 coins (gold – 500 lei/1,000 pieces, silver – 10 lei/5,000 pieces, tombac – 1 leu/5,000 pieces) – price: gold – 23,000 lei, silver – 630 lei, tombac – 250 lei (all without VAT)
