ECOTIC: 20 years of contributions to the circular economy in Romania

ECOTIC celebrates two decades of activity in the management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), as well as in promoting the transition to the circular economy in Romania.

Established in April 2006, ECOTIC was the first organization in Romania to implement extended producer responsibility, actively contributing to the development of an efficient system for the collection, recycling and reuse of WEEE.

In the 20 years of activity, ECOTIC's results reflect a significant impact at the national level:

  • Fish 500,000 tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment collected – an impressive amount, equivalent to double the volume Palace of the Parliament.
  • Fish 420,000 tons of secondary raw materials reintroduced into the circular economy
  • 38,000 pieces of equipment prepared for reuse and donated through the partnership with Workshops Without Borders, thus contributing to the endowment of approx 30% of educational units in Romania
  • Developing an extensive network of 12,770 WEEE and DBA collection points
  • The organization of fish 2,000 awareness and information campaigns among which we mention the eco education program School of Ecoterrians and ECOTIC caravan that brought environmental education closer to communities
  • The organization of 17 editions of the Awards Gala for a Clean Environmenta benchmark event to recognize performance in environmental protection

Over time, ECOTIC has developed partnerships with environmental authorities, companies and organizations, NGOs contributing to raising awareness among the population and improving the collection infrastructure at national level.

In its 20 years of activity, ECOTIC has built and consolidated a solid partnership with electrical and electronic equipment manufacturers, which represents an essential pillar in the development of an efficient waste management system in Romania. Since its establishment, the organization has acted as a platform for collaboration between industry, authorities and society, facilitating the implementation of extended producer responsibility in a coherent and sustainable way.

Today, ECOTIC brings together over 800 affiliate manufacturerswhich also contributes to infrastructure development and informing the population. Through this partnership, collection networks were created and expanded, efficient logistic solutions were implemented, contributing to the development of the entire sector.

ECOTIC's involvement in the development of the WEEE field, however, goes beyond the operational role. The organization had an active role in shaping the legislative framework and aligning Romania to European standards, offering expertise and institutional support in the regulatory process.

In parallel, through information campaigns and educational projects, ECOTIC contributes to raising awareness of the importance of separate collection and recycling of waste and to changing consumer behavior in the transition to the circular economy.

Looking to the future, ECOTIC aims to accelerate the transition to a functional circular economy in Romania, by expanding the collection infrastructure, supporting reuse and continuing eco education projects.

In a context where material resources are becoming more and more valuable, collaboration between producers, authorities, collection and recycling operators and consumers remains essential, and ECOTIC reaffirms its commitment to be an active partner in building a sustainable system, adapted to the challenges of the future.

“Throughout our activity, we have enjoyed the support of producers, environmental authorities, collection and recycling partners and consumers in fulfilling the objectives of the circular economy, with important contributions for the environment, economy and society,” said Valentin Negoiță, President of ECOTIC.
