With the support of RN-Vankor, as part of the annual EcoArctic forum, a national holiday was held in the villages of Nosok, Taimyr Dolgano-Nenets District, and Sovetskaya Rechka, Turukhansky District, Krasnoyarsk Territory – Reindeer Herder Day.
The EcoArctic Forum annually brings together initiatives aimed at preserving unique Arctic ecosystems and supporting the traditional way of life of the indigenous peoples of Taimyr. The key event of the forum was Reindeer Herder Day – one of the main events of the year for the indigenous peoples of the North.
About 500 guests-reindeer herders from the surrounding camps took part in the holiday. A competition of national costume, arts and crafts, and a tasting of northern cuisine took place at improvised ethnic venues.
The spectacular culmination of the holiday was competitions in national wrestling, throwing a maut on a trochee (a lasso is thrown on a long pole that is used to drive reindeer) and jumping over sleds, as well as reindeer sled races. Participants demonstrated the strength, dexterity and skill required to run a traditional farm.
The event ended with a concert with the participation of ethnic creative groups.
The village of Nosok is one of the largest national settlements in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, where the traditional nomadic way of life is preserved. More than one and a half thousand people live here, almost 90% of whom are representatives of indigenous peoples – Nenets, who lead a nomadic lifestyle. Sovetskaya Rechka is the only village in the Turukhansky district where representatives of the indigenous peoples – Evenks and Selkups – continue reindeer herding.
Preservation of the traditional way of life of the indigenous population living in the territory where the enterprise operates is an important area of RN-Vankor’s social policy. Oil workers are building housing for the local population, developing the infrastructure of northern villages, helping the families of reindeer herders, and improving the material and technical base of educational institutions, social facilities and health care institutions in the areas of indigenous indigenous peoples' residence.
