Extensive operation announced on all highways and roads in the country, from Tuesday. What are the time intervals and until the Road Census will be held. Notice for drivers

The General Census of Road Traffic, “an action of strategic importance for the planning and development of transport infrastructure in Romania”, will be started from April 21 by the Road Infrastructure Administration Company (CNAIR) through the Center for Road and Informatics Technical Studies (CESTRIN).

The road census takes place, starting from April 21, and has four main objectives, according to CNAIR:

  • Determination of the intensity and composition of road traffic (structured by vehicle categories);
  • Updating the transport demand evolution indices;
  • Providing the necessary data for substantiating investments in infrastructure, road maintenance and road safety;
  • Updating the database of Transport Models.

“The census will be carried out both by automatic methods (using automatic monitoring systems) and by the manual method, at registration points strategically established at the national level. According to AND Normative 557/2025, the registration periods are chosen in such a way as to capture the seasonal and daily variations in traffic, including weekdays, weekends and tourist peak periods, according to the calendar in the following link”, announces CNAIR.

Road census “does not involve stopping vehicles in traffic”

The institution emphasizes that the data collection process “does NOT involve stopping vehicles in traffic. Reviewer teams will be located outside the roadway so that road flow is not affected.”

“The final results of the census will be centralized and used to update the road technical databases and will be made available to the authorities in charge of road infrastructure management.

The monitoring of traffic flows is essential for the development of road infrastructure, providing the necessary technical support for the design of investments, the planning of maintenance works and the optimization of traffic”, notes CNAIR.

The data collected during the survey “allow a precise analysis of traffic dynamics and are fundamental in the assessment of the impact on the environment, facilitating the estimation of pollutant emissions and the development of strategies to improve air quality”.
