Once again, Tottenham have failed to win a Premier League game and remain in the relegation zone with five games to go. Spurs drew 2-2 at home to Brighton in a last-33 clash on Saturday night.
Tottenham led 1-0 and 2-1, a score they had until the 5th minute of extra time. A success would have been extremely precious for Radu Drăgușin's team, in the fight to save from relegation, but the visitors from Brighton got a point after Georginio Rutter's goal, and Tottenham's situation gets terribly complicated at the end of the season.
After Saturday's draw, Tottenham are on a 15-game Premier League run without success, with their last victory coming last year at the end of December. This was new manager Roberto De Zerbi's second game in charge, but his former pupils in the south of England denied him a much-needed win.
Radu Drăgușin remained an unused reserve
Tottenham's draw with Brighton delayed Wolverhampton's relegation. A possible victory for the hosts would have meant that “Wolves” would have mathematically left the Premier League.
After Leeds beat Wolves on Saturday, it is almost certain that in the Championship, from the new season, one of Tottenham, Nottingham Forest or West Ham will be relegated.
Spurs missed the breakthrough in the 90th+5th minute
Tottenham's players put in a lot of effort against Brighton and came close to victory after a superb Xavi Simons made it 2-1 in the 77th minute.
It was Pedro Porro who opened the scoring in the 39th minute. The hosts then missed an exceptional opportunity to double their lead just two minutes after the goal, after Dutchman Xavi Simons first hit the bar, and on the “restart” Porro's shot was blocked.
However, Tottenham conceded at the end of the first half, as they would do at the end of the match. Kaoru Mitoma scored to make it 1-1 seconds before the break.
Tottenham's players were active in search of the second goal and got it in the 77th minute. Georginio Rutter settled the final score, 2-2, and Tottenham remain in direct relegation place with 31 points with 5 stages to go.
