The champion from Bucharest 2025, qualification in tears in the final of the ATP 500 tournament in Munich

Flavio Cobolli (23, No. 16 ATP) advanced to the final act of the tournament in Munich after a quick 6-3, 6-3 win in 69 minutes over defending champion Alexander Zverev of Germany (28, No. 3 in the world). At the end, the Italian burst into tears, after the recent death of a friend who was only 13 years old.

It will be the fifth final of his career Flavio Cobolli and third on clay, after those won in 2025 at Bucharest and Hamburg. In Munich, the ATP 500 tournament, he provided an almost error-free performance contested in front of the title holder, Alexander Zverev.

The police reportedly found a note in his room that said “I'm sick of school.” His name was Mattia Maselli and he was a promising youngster from the Parioli Tennis Club. “Every point I play, every ball I touch, every step I take, I'll think of you“, Flavio wrote on Instagram after the victory in the “quarters” with Vik Kopriva. “Tennis School will never be the same without you, but I promise you will never be forgotten“, he added.

Cobolli also analyzed the game just finished. “It's one of the best matches I've played in my entire career” Cobolli said in the on-field interview. “He's a really good friend of mine on the circuit, a great guy. His team helps me during the season, that's why it's a bit difficult to play against him, I'm a bit shy when I meet the top playersFlavio added.
