Donald Trump announced an Israel-Lebanon ceasefire

Fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah in southern Lebanon threatened to disrupt a two-week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.

Trump's statement on Thursday did not mention Hezbollah. Trump posted on social media that the two countries would begin a truce at 5 p.m. New York time.

The president also directed Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine “to work with Israel and Lebanon to achieve lasting peace.”
