Iran threatens to block the Red Sea if the US continues its port blockade

Iran issued a warning on Wednesday regarding the possible blockade of traffic in the Red Sea, although it has no direct access to this area, if the United States continues the blockade on its ports, reports AFP.

Iranian officials say these measures could lead to a violation of the truce that has been in place since April 8.
General Ali Abdollahi, the head of Iran's armed forces, said maintaining the maritime restrictions could be a step towards escalating the conflict.
“If the United States maintains its maritime blockade and 'creates insecurity for Iranian merchant ships and oil tankers,' it will be the 'prelude' to a violation of the April 8 ceasefire,” the official said.
He warned that Iran could take firm measures in the region.
“The powerful armed forces of the Islamic Republic will not allow any export or import into the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman or the Red Sea,” added the general, according to a statement broadcast by state television.
