US Vice President JD Vance reacted to the Hungarian election results on Monday, expressing his regret at the defeat of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, but adopting a conciliatory tone towards his successor, the conservative Péter Magyar, reports Agerpres.
“I am saddened that he lost (…) but I am sure that we will work very well with the next Hungarian Prime Minister”, he declared in an intervention on Fox News.
At the same time, JD Vance admitted that the result of the election was not a total surprise for the American administration, stating that “I knew very well that there was a high chance that Viktor would lose this election.”
The statement comes just days after the US vice president personally traveled to Budapest to offer support to Viktor Orbán in the election campaign.
The reaction of Vice President JD Vance is the first official statement from Washington on this subject and comes in a sensitive political context, after the change of power in Hungary generated strong echoes on the international stage.
We remind you that, approached immediately after the announcement of the results, Donald Trump avoided commenting on the defeat of Viktor Orbán, ignoring journalists' questions on this topic.
