Viktor Orban, “powered on X by a network of fake accounts”. Warning before the Hungarian elections

A network operated abroad, mobilized last year to influence the elections in the Netherlands, has been reactivated to support content in favor of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on the X platform before tomorrow's parliamentary elections, the NGO Alliance4Europe denounced on Saturday, reports AFP, quoted by Agerpres.
This network, consisting of several hundred fake accounts “managed mainly from Nigeria and other West African and Asian countries, was systematically reoriented during the European elections to artificially amplify far-right, pro-Russian and anti-system content,” the NGO, active in the fight against disinformation, said in a press release.
“First identified during the Dutch parliamentary elections in October 2025, it was later observed operating using the same modus operandi before the Hungarian elections in April 2026,” Alliance4Europe added.
According to the NGO, these accounts act in an automated and coordinated manner to manipulate the algorithms of the X platform and give greater visibility to pro-Orban and pro-Russian Hungarian-language accounts by systematically following them and massively sharing their content.
Hungary's election campaign has been marred by allegations of interference from Moscow, with experts citing evidence of Russia's continued efforts to support Viktor Orban.
Crucial moment for Viktor Orban
The Hungarian prime minister, in power since 2010, is running for a fifth term in parliamentary elections scheduled for Sunday.
Viktor Orban is at a crucial moment as he faces the risk of losing power for the first time after 16 consecutive years of ruling with absolute majorities. Most independent opinion polls show Orban's Fidesz party trailing the center-right Tisza party.
Specifically, shortly before the elections, 48% of the eligible voting population intended to vote for the Tisza Party, 30% for Fidesz, 4% for Mi Hazánk, 2% for the Social Democrats – DK, 1% for MKKP – the Hungarian Two-Tailed Dog Party.
An analysis published this week by the Median polling institute predicted that the opposition Tisza party, led by conservative leader Peter Magyar, could win a two-thirds parliamentary majority in Sunday's Hungarian election, which would allow it to amend the constitution and key laws needed to unlock EU funds.
According to Median, Tisza can win between 138 and 143 seats in the 199-member parliament, according to an estimate based on an analysis of the institute's five most recent opinion polls in late February and March.
Fidesz is expected to get between 49 and 55 seats, while the far-right “Our Fatherland” (Mi Hazank) party may win five or six seats.
