A fire broke out at the St. Jakob-Park in Basel, Switzerland led to the postponement of this weekend's Swiss Premier League match between FC Basel and FC Thun. The fire completely destroyed the home team's locker room.
Although the match was to be played away by Basel, the former Swiss champion asked for the match to be postponed.
Basel's match was postponed after a fire broke out at the stadium
According to the official statement of the management of the host club, among the damaged goods are the boots of the players, all the playing and spare equipment, as well as the technical and medical equipment essential for the organization of the match.
The fire also affected other rooms. According to the DPA agency, the cause of the fire in the basement is not yet clear.
The management of the competition approved the request from Basel to postpone the match due to force majeure. St. Jakob-Park is the largest football stadium in Switzerland, with a capacity of almost 39,000 seats.
This postponement comes at the request of FC Basel, who declare themselves “unable to play the away match against FC Thun” due to property damage caused by the fire. These include the changing rooms, showers, offices, but also the equipment: boots, spare shirts, training materials, etc.
Even if a new date will have to be set later, this unusual incident disrupts the schedule of the two teams. FC Basel expressed its willingness to cooperate fully with the authorities to understand the cause of the incident and to ensure a return to normal in the best conditions.
