Former Chelsea and Brazil star Oscar has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 34 after being diagnosed with a serious heart problem. The footballer played in Sao Paulo, in his native country.

The Brazilian midfielder was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, a condition that causes a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate, leading to episodes of fainting. This decision comes after an incident in November last year, when Oscar was rushed to hospital after passing out.

Oscar retired from football: he won everything he could with Chelsea

Oscar returned to his native Sao Paulo in January 2025 and recorded two goals and five assists. His career began at the academy of Sau Paulo, before transferring to Internacional, the club that opened the door to a transfer to Europe.

At Internacional he played 70 games, scoring 19 goals and providing 22 assists. Those numbers led Chelsea to pay no less than €32 million to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

In 2013, Chelsea acquired him, and the Brazilian became a regular player for the London team by the middle of the 2016-2017 season. During this period he played 203 matches, scored 38 goals and provided 31 decisive assists.

A surprising transfer to China followed, at Shangahi Port. The Chinese paid 60 million to bring him. He collected 248 matches, 77 goals and 142 assists in China.

He made 48 appearances for the “Selecao”, with a record of 12 goals and 15 assists.

During his impressive career, Oscar won major titles including two English championships, a Europa League, a League Cup, a Brazilian championship and a Confederations Cup with the national team. Q
