Fotinha Well
Photina the Samaritan (the Russian version of the name is Svetlana), whose memory is celebrated on this day, is the heroine of the famous biblical legend, the same woman from whom Jesus Christ asked for water from Jacob’s well.
Thanks to two legends – about the meeting with Christ at the well and about the death of the martyr in the well, well water was especially revered in Rus' on this day. It was believed that on Fotinya it acquired healing properties. On this day it was necessary to wash oneself with water from the well – this way one could be cured of various ailments, primarily fever.
They asked Fotinya for help in other ways. In some places in Rus', on this day they wrote a prayer on a piece of paper, tied it in a rag, and gave it to a sick person to wear around their neck for three or nine days. After this, the note had to be burned on a candle and the remaining ashes eaten.
In addition, on this day flax, the main “supplier” of fabric among the Russian people, was glorified. In the morning, beautiful things made of linen were taken out into the street, hung on fences, woodpiles, and gates. Birch branches were decorated with towels. The girls danced in circles with long linen towels, which were customary to use at weddings. It was believed that this ritual attracted worthy suitors.
