30 breastfeeding women were invited to show a female orangutan how to breastfeed her offspring at the zoo
A female orangutan named Mujur unexpectedly gave birth to a baby for zookeepers. This monkey's past experience of motherhood was unsuccessful – Mujur's cubs died because she did not learn to feed them.
This time, Dublin Zoo invited 30 breastfeeding women to take turns feeding their babies in front of Mujur. Thus, the new mother had to adopt the actions of her mothers through imitation.
The experiment went well, but the orangutan was unable to apply her new knowledge in practice. The cub was removed and is being bottle-fed.
