Romania is discussing with Ukraine the co-production of drones through the SAFE program. Miruta: “MApN should be a central piece, not just a beneficiary”

The Minister of National Defense, Radu Miruță, discussed on Tuesday, at the MApN headquarters, with the Deputy Minister of Defense for European Integration from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, Sergiy Boyev, about the possibility of the development and production of drones in co-production, within the European SAFE instrument, according to a press release from the ministry.
According to MApN, officials have looked at options for the production of unmanned aircraft in direct collaboration, including technology transfer options.
“The project benefits from 200 million euros through the SAFE program, in co-production, and we want MApN to be a central piece in this collaboration, not just a beneficiary,” said Miruță.
He stated that the authorities are currently discussing the formation of a team dedicated to the project, and the deadline for signing the contract is the end of May.
The Minister of Defense also said that Romania would benefit from the experience gained by Ukraine in the war, as well as access to personnel and infrastructure for the production of military equipment.
“It will also be an advantage for Ukraine, namely the fact that through Romania's participation in the SAFE project, the production of drones will be financed,” he added.
According to the ministry, technical discussions will continue in the coming days, including with the participation of 15 Ukrainian companies that presented their capabilities.
