On this day, the Orthodox Church commemorates St. Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem, who lived in the 4th century.
Kirill received his nickname among the people thanks to the March weather and the rapid melting of snow. Having gone out in the morning on a sleigh onto the snow, which had melted the day before in the hot sun and had frozen overnight, you could really peel off the runners on the crust.
In Rus' they said about this day: “It’s winter both in front and behind Cyril” (that is, one could still be afraid of spring frosts); “The Kirillov March will give you a chill.” However, if coltsfoot bloomed on this day, this indicated the imminent approach of summer and a warm beginning of April.
