The whale that ran aground twice in the Baltic Sea managed to save itself. German authorities are monitoring his route

The humpback whale stranded on the German coast of the Baltic Sea for several days broke free and swam out to sea, on the night of Saturday to Sunday, but its fate remains uncertain, the media authorities on the spot said, reports AFP, taken over by News.ro.

This marine mammal of 12-15 meters managed to free itself from the sand bank where it was stuck, thanks to the rise of the sea level, announced a spokesman for the region, quoted by the media present on the spot.

The animal is flagged down by the German Coast Guard, who are trying to track it down.

But, as the waters are not too deep near the coast, the fate of the whale is uncertain and it could fail again, the spokesman lamented.

The whale was seen for the first time on the night of Sunday to Monday, on a sandbar, in the Bay of Lübeck (northeast).

She was freed for the first time in the night from Thursday to Friday, following an intervention by the rescuers, who dug on the bottom of the sea with excavators, around the animal, to facilitate her return to the sea.

However, the hopes were short-lived, and the animal failed again, a few tens of kilometers further east, in Wismar Bay. The state of the whale's health caused concern at the time. Some of the parts of the whale's skin were badly damaged.

Rescuers deliberately chose not to intervene, hoping the whale would free itself, a strategy that appears to have paid off. The coast guard kept the boats of the curious at a distance, to avoid any additional stress to the animal.

Researchers hope the whale will return to the North Sea and then the Atlantic Ocean – its natural habitat. The presence of this cetacean in the Baltic Sea – where this species is rare – could be explained by following a school of fish or by disturbances related to underwater noise.
