Decision with immediate effect for airline passengers

The United Nations Aviation Agency announced that the use of portable, rechargeable batteries will be limited to two per passenger on an airline flight from Friday as part of new rules on the use of such devices in the air, Reuters reports.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) said in a statement that passengers will also be prohibited from recharging their external batteries, also known as power banks, during flights.
Airlines such as Lufthansa and countries such as South Korea had already introduced restrictions on the use of external batteries following incidents such as the fire on board an Air Busan plane in 2025.
The Montreal-based ICAO normally sets global aviation standards that are largely approved by its 193 members.
The new specifications for external batteries are applicable immediately, as Reuters points out.
