Trump says Iran allowed 10 oil tankers through Strait of Hormuz as 'gift' to US

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Iran had allowed 10 oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz as an apparent gesture of goodwill in negotiations, Reuters notes.

Trump made the remarks during a White House cabinet meeting, detailing what he had previously described as a “gift” from Iran.

“They said, to show you that we're serious and trustworthy, we're going to let you have eight oil tankers, eight big ships,” Trump said. “I think they were right and they were honest, and the ships were, I think, under the Pakistani flag… In the end there were 10 ships.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for additional details on the ships.

Donald Trump's remarks came as he pressured Iran to accept a deal to unblock this strategic maritime point and end its nuclear program.

The US president sparked confusion on Tuesday when he said Iran had offered the United States a costly energy concession, without explaining exactly what he meant.

“They gave us a gift, and the gift arrived today, and it was a very big one, worth a huge amount of money,” Trump told reporters at the time.
