“More respect.” Orban criticized Latvia because it is allegedly on the side of Ukraine, not Hungary

On March 26, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina wrote a message on the X network regarding Hungary blocking a loan to Ukraine. According to her, to make a decision, the unanimity of all EU countries is needed, but now Orban is against it, although he previously agreed with this political decision. Silinya stressed that such a change in position is “unacceptable.”

“It is unacceptable for Latvia that such blackmail [Венгрии] has become the norm – the EU must fulfill its obligations and provide Ukraine with the necessary funding,” Silinya noted.

Orban in his statement called, in his opinion, Latvia’s support for Ukraine on this issue, instead of taking into account the position of Hungary, “wrong”.

According to him, Budapest is acting in accordance with the European Union (EU) agreements reached in December 2025 and insists on returning to the conditions agreed then.

The Hungarian Prime Minister also repeated his statements about the alleged “oil blockade” on the part of Ukraine, which, according to him, negatively affects the Hungarian economy.

“Instead of attacking me, you should knock on the president's door [Украины Владимира] Zelensky, calling on him to restore legal conditions and lift the oil blockade on Hungary,” Orban wrote.

He also said that he considers his country's decision to be “legally sound” and “politically sensible.” And he demands “more respect” for Hungary.

“We Hungarians find it difficult to understand why Latvia, our NATO ally and EU partner, is not on the side of Hungary, but on the side of Ukraine, which is violating its obligations. I hope that this erroneous and unfair political position will change in the spirit of loyal cooperation,” Orban added.
