Coco Gauff (22 years old, 4 WTA) went 6-1, 6-1 against Karolina Muchova (29 years old, 14 WTA) and qualified for the final of the tournament in Miami, where she will meet either world leader Aryna Sabalenka (27 years old), or Elena Rybakina (26 years old, 2 WTA), the Australian Open champion.
After having to withdraw in the third round at Indian Wells, Coco Gauff considered the option of not participating in the Miami Open, with her team believing that she should skip this tournament and prepare for the clay competitions.
Coco Gauff, after the victory against Karolina Muchova: “I trust in God”
In the end, the American made the decision to play and had an excellent run, picking up 5 wins on her way to the final. After defeating Sorana Cîrstea and Belinda BencicGauff had Karolina Muchova as her opponent, an awkward player.
However, the Czech was not able to keep up with the 22-year-old tennis player. Gauff played excellently, dominated both sets and won 6-1, 6-1 after 90 minutes. The score is a bit deceiving as there were many very long games, but the world number 4 was able to manage the important points better.
Therefore, Gauff qualified for the Miami Open final, where he will have an extremely complicated duel. She will play either Aryna Sabalenka or Elena Rybakina.
“I'm super excited to be in the finals of this tournament. I didn't expect to be here. I tried to find the joy of playing. I had fun and today was easier, but the week was full of long matches. I'm happy that I went through in two sets (no Karolina Muchova)”, said Gauff, during the interview on the field.
“After Indian Wells, I thought about not playing here. One day I woke up and told myself that I must try to play if I can. I am happy with the decision made, I trust God and He has better plans than me“, the American concluded.
The showdown between Sabalenka and Rybakina takes place tonight around 2:30.
