Lionel Jospin passed away on Sunday. In January, he stated that he underwent a “serious operation”, without giving any other details about his health, according to France24.
Born on July 12, 1937, in Meudon, in a Protestant family, Jospin was influenced by an intellectual and political environment since childhood. His father was involved in the socialist movement, and he would eventually become the leader of the French Socialist Party.
Lionel Jospin led the French government between 1997 and 2002, during the period of cohabitation with the centre-right president Jacques Chirac.
His tenure was marked by a number of important reforms, including reducing working hours, expanding access to free healthcare and introducing civil unions for unmarried couples regardless of sexual orientation.
