Romania fights with Bulgaria, but also with Cameroon, Guatemala, Lebanon, El Salvador at the cost of life MAP

Romania remains one of the cheap countries globally and regionally in terms of the cost of living, according to the global cost of living index for 2026 made by Numbeo, which measures the price of daily expenses — including rent — relative to New York, considered the reference base with a value of 100. However, this is also in the conditions in which prices are also related to salaries/incomes, respectively the purchasing power of the population.
The cost of living index compares the price of everyday expenses — food, restaurants, transportation, utilities and rent — to New York City, a city used as a benchmark of 100.
In other words, an index of about 40, which Romania has, indicates a general price level of about 40% of the costs considered standard in the American city and thus can allow direct comparison between different economies. Romania appears among the countries with the lowest costs of living, both in the region and at the European and global level.
In the general cost of living index, Romania has a score of 40.6, which places it in the second half of the world ranking. In the same cost area are Bulgaria, Armenia, Argentina, but also Lebanon, Cameroon, Ethiopia, all with close index values, while under Romania appear Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russia, Moldova or Ukraine, with lower levels of general costs.
