On this day, the memory of two saints who bore the same names is celebrated – St. Paul the Simple, who lived in the 4th century, and St. Paul the Confessor, Bishop of Prussiad, who lived in the 9th century.
In Rus' it was believed that “spring is coming” from Paul. However, the cold was still felt: “It’s dripping from the roofs, and it’s scratching your nose”; “Spring is fickle, like a stepmother: it will blow with warmth, then it will catch up with cold weather”; “Spring and autumn – there are eight weather conditions per day.” However, the warmth inevitably set in, and the snow cover melted faster and faster. Sometimes layers of snow and ice fell from the roofs – according to popular belief, these were grave sins falling to the ground. Therefore, on this day one should pray to the icon of the Mother of God “Helper of Sinners.”
It was possible to check on Pavel how true the signs were. Cloudy weather at night foreshadowed frost the next day. But the abundant drops from the icicles promised a good flax harvest in the summer.
