Scientists have discovered an ancient figurine of a pig: it is about a thousand years old
The figurine, which experts date to between 940 and 1000 AD, was found during excavations in Iceland.
The figurine was carved from local stone and is well preserved. The only serious damage that can be identified is a broken ear. It is unknown what animal the figurine represents, but there are several options: a pig, a bear or a dog.
The Vikings raised pigs for food. Bears are not native to Iceland. As for the last option, there is a belief that the figurine also resembles an Icelandic dog.
