PHOTO How Dimitrie Pompeiu boulevard in the north of Bucharest will look after the modernization and when the works can start

Dimitrie Pompeiu Boulevard will be widened to 4 lanes in each direction, and the tram line will be extended to bd. Barbu Văcărescu, to be connected with line 5. On Wednesday, the Capital City Hall presented several simulations of what the artery will look like after modernization.

“From a narrow street choked with cars, with one lane in each direction and broken, degraded sidewalks, Bd. Dimitrie Pompeiu will become a modern road, with two traffic lanes in each direction, green space, bike lanes, a double tram line and much more generous sidewalks. The tram line will be extended to Bd. Barbu Văcărescu, and the tracks will be connected with those of line 5. Over this expansion, we will build a pedestrian walkway”, announced the City Hall of the Capital, on the Facebook page.

The widening of the street requires the expropriation of several lands. Last week, the General Council approved an expropriation corridor of 35,888 square meters, on both sides of the boulevard, the estimated value being 74 million lei. The money for the expropriations must be credited to the owners' account by the end of 2026.

The City Hall of the Capital does not give a deadline for when the works will begin, however, if the expropriations are completed this year, and the procurement procedure for appointing the builder is carried out without objections, from the experience of other projects, the most optimistic deadline would be the summer of 2027. A less optimistic deadline is 2028.

The construction site will last at least 2 years, say the representatives of the municipality.

According to the feasibility study and the technical-economic indicators approved in 2025, the value of the works is estimated at 544 million lei and the execution term is 2 years, and the design 1 more year.

“The construction site will continue with the construction of a connecting road between Şos. Pipera – Bd. Dimitrie Pompeiu and Str. Fabrica de Glucoză. At the intersection of Dimitrie Pompeiu and Str. Petricani, we will build, together with the City Hall of Sector 2, an overpass over the railway, to save drivers the time lost due to the CFR barrier. In parallel, we are working on the modernization of the tram line, which we started a few days ago”, announces the Capital City Hall.

Dimitrie Pompeiu Street is one of the busiest in Bucharest, full of potholes, with broken sidewalks. It remained the same as it was during the communist period, although in the meantime many new office buildings were built there and the area was radically transformed.
