LIVE 2026 Oscars: Sean Penn wins 3rd career Oscar, 'Sinners' and 'One Battle After Another' share their first statuettes / Triumph for Netflix too

The 2026 Academy Awards, the 98th in the history of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is now announcing its winners. The first statuettes have already been awarded, with acclaimed American actor Sean Penn being awarded the Oscar for the third time in his career, while the films “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another” shared their first two awards for feature films.

Penn, now 65, won the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance in director Paul Thomas Anderson's “One Battle After Another,” a political satire in which Penn plays a corrupt military officer.

Sean Penn previously won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role twice, in 2009 for the mystery film “Mystic River” and in 2009 for “Milk,” a biographical feature film about the life of American activist and politician Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the state of California.

At this year's Academy Awards, the statuette for best actress in a supporting role was awarded to actress Amy Madigan, a 75-year-old Hollywood veteran who was honored for her performance in the horror film “Weapons”, which begins with the mysterious disappearance of a group of students from the same school class.

Both Penn and Madigan were seen as favorites to win the statuettes in their respective categories.

“Sinners” and “One Battle After Another,” the big favorites of the night, have so far won in both categories in which they were not in direct competition. American director Ryan Coogler's horror film “Sinners” won the Oscar for best original screenplay, while “One Battle After Another” won best adapted screenplay.

Netflix, on the other hand, won the Oscar for the best animated film thanks to its film “KPop Demon Hunters”, which was so successful that it surpassed well-known films such as “Don't Look Up” to become the most watched feature film ever produced by the streaming platform.

The 2026 Oscars is a real triumph for Netflix, with its film competing for the statuette for best animated feature with Disney's Zootropolis 2, which became the highest-grossing animated title of all time in January.
