“Do I feel good about it? No. But I don't think I cheated either”

After a first set easily won by the Russian, 6-1, the scoreboard read 5-5 in the second set with Draper on serve. At 0:15, after a rally of several shots, Medvedev hit the net. Immediately, he addressed the chair umpire, claiming a gesture made by Draper during the rally.

Between points, after a left forehand, Draper opened his arms wide for a split second. The Russian appeared disturbed by the gesture, accusing him of being distracted, although between that moment and the shot he misfired, hitting the net, he had sent the ball into the opponent's court twice.

Daniil Medvedev responds to the controversy:

Draper's gesture was complained to the referee

The referee adjudged and called obstruction, so Draper's field point went to the Russian: “Mr. Draper made a hand gesture, something different from what he usually does at points. So it is an obstruction (no – hindrance)”.

Draper protested on the field, then, at the net, chided Medvedev that “I'm not mad at you, but I don't think [acel gest] distracted you”.

After the match, Daniil was questioned about this episode.

Daniil Medvedev responds to the controversy: “Do I feel good about it? No. But I don't think I cheated”

“I think I should have claimed the moment it happened. I shouldn't have waited until the end of the point, but if you look at my first forehand after his gesture, you'll see that I could have done more. I was a bit distracted, so I asked the chair umpire: «What should I do?».

Should I claim right away next time? And he said to me: «Oh, if you want we can do the video analysis». I said “OK, let's do it”, and what will decide will decide. He decided that was the point for me and I accepted that.

That's all. Am I seriously distracted? Not. Was I a little distracted? Yes. Was that enough to give me the point? I don't know“, said the Russian.

Asked how things are going between him and Draper, Medvedev replied:

“I think we're OK. It's more of a question to ask him, I'm OK with him after what happened. I think we have a very good relationship.

I told him right away [arbitrului] that if he thinks it's not enough, 15:15 and we continue. If he thinks it's enough [pentru a interveni]then 30:0, sorry. Do I feel good about this? Not really. But I don't feel cheated or anything either“.

That moment put Draper on the wrong foot. Medvedev broke, then closed out the game on his own serve. The Brit won just two more points until the end.

In the semifinals, Medvedev will face Carlos Alcaraz.
