During Friday's session, councilors of the Konin district adopted a resolution supporting the construction of a nuclear power plant in Konin. In justification of their position, they indicated that the investment would be a strong impulse for the entire region.

The first Polish nuclear power plant is being built in Pomerania, in the Choczewo commune. The government may make a decision on the location of a second such power plant this year. Konin and Bełchatów in the Greater Poland Voivodeship are applying for the investment. Łódź.

In the justification for the resolution, councilors recalled that the fuel and energy sector has been operating in Eastern Greater Poland for over half a century. However, the region's natural resources are exhaustible, and searching for new directions of development is not easy.

Operating in the region PAK Kopalnia Węgla Brunatnego “Konin” is scheduled to finish mining by the end of this year. At the same time, the operation of the last coal unit at the “Pątnów” power plant is planned to be completed. The owner of the mine and power plant – the ZE PAK Group – is the largest employer in the Konin region.

The councilors pointed out that the construction of a nuclear power plant in Konin would constitute a “strong impulse for the entire region”. As they added, Eastern Greater Poland has human potential in the form of qualified staff and developed energy infrastructure. “In Konin County, we perfectly understand that energy transformation is the only path to a clean future for Eastern Greater Poland,” the councilors said in justification of the resolution.

The initiative to build a nuclear power plant in Konin was called “a strategic element of the emerging plans for the operation of this region after the closure of the mine.” The councilors described the implementation of the energy transformation without the use of nuclear energy as “difficult” and asked the government to take action to select Konin as the location of the nuclear power plant.

The resolution was supported by councilors unanimously.

In the previous months, similar resolutions and positions were adopted by, among others: councilors of the local government of the Greater Poland Voivodeship, councilors of Konin and Poznań and the Convention of Village Heads and Mayors of the Konin County. In February, members of parliament from the ruling coalition from the Konin subregion expressed support for the choice of Konin as the location of the second nuclear power plant.

The first Polish nuclear power plant is being built in Pomerania in the Lubiatowo-Kopalino location. It is to have three blocks using Westinghouse AP1000 technology with a total capacity of 3,750 MW. The contractor will be the Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium, the investor and future operator is the 100% owned company. PEJ company to the State Treasury.
