Canada announces that it will maintain sanctions on oil from Russia. “We'll still do it”

— Canada will maintain sanctions on Russian oil, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney assured on Friday during his visit to Norway, referring to the American decision to exempt Russian oil from existing sanctions. The meeting was also attended by the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Stoere and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. “All three of us have defended sanctions against Russian oil and will continue to do so,” Carney said at a joint news conference, Radio-Canada reported.

But that's not all – according to Bloomberg, Canada also intends to maintain sanctions against the Russian shadow fleet that transports oil from Russia. Carney stressed that Canada would continue its own sanctions on Russian assets to “keep the pressure” on Russia and weaken its ability to wage war against Ukraine.

At an earlier press conference of the prime ministers of Germany and Norway, Friedrich Merz said: “We think it would be wrong to weaken the sanctions now, for any reason.” […] We will not allow ourselves to be distracted from this by the war in Iran. Stoere, in turn, said that “more pressure should be put on Russia to put an end to this unacceptable war.”
