“They chose to run.” Radu Miruță criticizes AUR after its MPs did not vote for the location of American planes in Romania

The Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță, reacted on Wednesday after the AUR parliamentarians did not vote for the CSAT request regarding the placement of American refueling planes in Romania, withdrawing their cards from the voting system.

“Unfortunately, some parliamentarians who loudly declare themselves “nationalists” have chosen to run away from the vote. They collect the parliamentary allowance, but when the moment of responsibility comes… they disappear”, Miruta declared.

However, the draft decision was approved by the joint plenary session of the Parliament, with 272 votes for, 18 against, 5 abstentions, and two parliamentarians did not vote.

The Minister emphasized the importance of this decision for strengthening Romania's defense capacity: “Increasing Romania's defense capacity is not a fad. It is a responsibility. Romania does not leave its security in the hands of noise and propaganda, just because some politicians give satisfaction to those who would like a weaker Romania. In order to be stronger and to deter any aggressor, only the military is not enough. We also need technical defense capabilities.”

He stated that the additional military equipment that will arrive in Romania will strengthen deterrence against any potential aggressor and demonstrate the country's commitment as a responsible ally of the United States.

“Today, Romania passed a test of seriousness and political maturity. We demonstrated that we are a responsible ally and a reliable partner of the United States. The request to deploy additional military capabilities on Romanian territory was analyzed in the CSAT and approved by the Parliament, exactly how a democracy works”. he wrote on Facebook.

Radu Miruță reiterated the criticism of the parliamentarians who did not show up to vote: “The natural question is: if they ran away from a vote, what would they do if they had to make really difficult decisions for Romania? This is their political “maturity”: sent by people to represent Romania's interests, they choose not to show up. Or maybe they preferred to listen to other “instructions”, coming from other capitals. Let's be very clear: today's vote means more defense capacity for Romania, not entering the war.”

The minister stressed that keeping the peace depends on the ability to defend and deter the aggressors, not on slogans or panic.

“That is precisely why the discussions must be conducted with arguments and responsibility — not with panic and not with lies. Responsible governance means having the courage to make the right decisions for Romania, even when others prefer to blow lies into the vuvuzelas.” concluded the minister.
