The rarest and unstudied “ghost octopus” Casper was discovered off the coast of Chile
The unusual underwater inhabitant was first found on February 27, 2016 near the Hawaiian Islands at a depth of 4290 meters. At such a depth, an octopus of this type was encountered for the first time, and its appearance did not match the descriptions of related cephalopods – it had no fins and was completely absent chromatophores (pigment cells characteristic of most cephalopods).
Since 2016, the octopus has not received an official name and description, since no one has caught it yet, and it was named Casper for its resemblance to the ghost from the film. New photographs were obtained during the study of the seamount. In addition to Casper, another 20 species new to science were discovered around the mountain.
