Explosion in front of a synagogue in Belgium. “An extremely violent act of anti-Semitism”

The explosion occurred last night, around 04:00 local time, in front of a synagogue in the French-speaking city of Liège, in eastern Belgium. No people were injured, but the synagogue was damaged, the police announced, public broadcaster RTBF reports.
The incident took place in front of the synagogue located on rue Léon Frédéricq in Liège. The synagogue, built in 1899, is also a museum that presents various objects of worship and the history of the Jewish community in Liège.
The mayor of Liège, Willy Demeyer, denounced an anti-Semitic criminal act.
“I categorically condemn this extremely violent act of anti-Semitism, which goes against Liège's tradition of respect for others. There can be no question of importing external conflicts into our city,” the mayor said.
A local resident of the area described that the main window of the synagogue was shattered, and the windows of the buildings in front of the synagogue were also broken.

The street was closed during the investigation, and a safety perimeter was established in the immediate vicinity, police said.
“Right in front of the synagogue there was an explosion and the whole facade, all the windows were broken and everything exploded. We were woken up by the noise and when we came down we saw that everything had been destroyed,” said the local.
Following the blast, investigators from the “terrorism” division of the Federal Judicial Police in Liège opened an investigation and the Belgian explosives disposal service went to the scene.
