Suspicious death in the family of a dignitary from the Republic of Moldova: his wife allegedly committed suicide due to violence

The wife of Dumitru Vartic, the vice-president of the Hîncești district and a member of the party in power in the Republic of Moldova, allegedly committed suicide. The case caused outrage especially among the locals who accuse the man of violence. PAS officials asked him to resign.

The officials of the General Police Inspectorate (IGP) of the Republic of Moldova told “Adevărul” that Ludmila Vartic, the official's wife, was found breathless on March 3 after allegedly throwing herself from a block of flats in Chisinau.

“The case took place on Tuesday in Chisinau and was registered by the Police. Even if the woman left a farewell note, the law enforcement officers are examining all the aspects that led her to resort to this gesture”said Diana Fetco, spokeswoman for the IGP.

Diana Fetco also pointed out that the Vartic family had not been investigated for domestic violence cases in the past five years.

“I specify the fact that, at least in the last 5 years, no complaints or other issues related to violence have been received in this family. The police are taking all measures to elucidate the circumstances of this case”the spokeswoman concluded.

Mother orphans

The Vartices had two minor daughters. The death of their mother caused outrage among many Moldovans, especially the residents of Hîncești, where the family lived. Ludmila Vartic worked as an educator at a kindergarten, and Dumitru Vartic is the vice president of Hîncești district. Some locals claim that the man is responsible for the tragedy.

“He was the victim of moral abuse and not only in the family, and who, unable to cope with this abuse, decided to leave us”mentioned Natalia Untilă.

“Those who hold public positions should be examples of responsibility, balance and respect for family and human values. A public office is not only about power or status, but also about integrity and morality. When these values ​​are violated, does society have the right to ask whether such a person can properly represent the public interest?! Instead of clarity and ownership, there is silence and attempts to quickly move past what happened! Tragic! Sad!”, added Iulia Bescrepnîi.

“Ludmila had the misfortune of marrying a wretch who poisoned her existence for years. At first with harsh words, as one woman said right at the table with guests, he allowed himself to humiliate her, then, after she gave birth to her first daughter, she started the physical aggression. After she gave birth to her second daughter, fighting was already the order of the day. With the passage of time the mess lost all human traces and started bringing mistresses right into their house. The first time he brought another woman into the house, Ludmila was forced to accept her and act as if nothing had happened, and when they retired to the bedroom, Ludmila, desperate, swallowed pills. It was a suicide attempt but she escaped with her life only because she was taken to the hospital in time. After that followed other days, weeks, months and years of beatings, humiliation and terror.” explained Minodora Calistru-Prisacu.

Moreover, some people who knew Ludmila Vartic claim that they did not know about the misfortune or when she was buried because her husband allegedly hid all the details.

“He left us unexpectedly and tragically, silently and with great pain, a man with a gentle soul, who gave love, educated our children and cultivated true values. Her passing leaves a huge void in the hearts of all who knew and appreciated her. We will always keep alive the memory of a dedicated, kind and enlightened man, who knew how to give from the heart”, stated Zinaida Botnaru.

The request of the deceased woman's husband

Dumitru Vartic has not yet offered a point of view, but he posted a message on social networks saying goodbye to his wife, saying that he is going through difficult times and asking for peace, discretion and understanding from people.

“My priority now is our children, who need love, support and a father who will be strong for them. I lost my wife and the mother of our children. For our family, this loss is a tragedy that cannot be put into words. We are trying, day by day, to find the strength to move on and stay united in this very difficult time”, he mentioned.

Meanwhile, Doina Gherman, the vice-president of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) and the vice-president of the Chisinau Parliament, asked Dumitru Vartic to resign from the position of vice-president of the Hîncești district and to leave the ranks of PAS.

“We strongly condemn any form of violence against women and girls. We will follow with the utmost attention that all the details of this case are elucidated, decisions are made based on the established facts, and those responsible respond swiftly to the law”. wrote Doina Gherman on her Facebook page.

And those in charge of the National Agency for the Prevention and Combating of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence reported themselves in connection with this tragic case.

“In order to understand all the circumstances of this case, the Agency initiated official proceedings and sent information requests to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection – including to the territorial social assistance structures (ATAS), the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Moldova, as well as to the local public authorities in Hîncești and the Botanica and Râșcani Sector, in order to analyze how the responsible institutions intervened”. detailed the employees of the structure in the neighboring country.

On Women's Day, a moment of silence took place in the municipality of Hîncești in memory of Ludmila Vartic, and dozens of participants threw white balloons into the air.
