Livestock is seized from the private farms of residents of several districts of the Novosibirsk region and destroyed as part of measures to localize foci of pasteurellosis and rabies, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Novosibirsk region told RIA Novosti.
“Animals are being confiscated and destroyed from citizens’ private farms. Citizens will be required to receive compensation; this is provided for by law. There is no threat to the life and health of people,” the agency’s interlocutor said, emphasizing that villagers are asked to treat the situation with understanding and regularly vaccinate their pets.
According to the ministry, since the beginning of 2026, 42 outbreaks of rabies have been registered in the Novosibirsk region. Quarantine has been declared in five districts of the region. Foci of pasteurellosis, an acute infectious disease of bacterial origin, are also localized.
The ministry explained the sharp increase in the incidence of rabies and pasteurellosis since January 2026 by the large amount of snow that fell this winter, which provoked a lack of food among wild animals, as a result of which they are forced to go outside and infect unvaccinated livestock.
“There is no threat to the life and health of the population. Products of animal origin entering the retail chain undergo mandatory veterinary and sanitary examination and are safe for consumers,” reports the Veterinary Department of the Novosibirsk Region.
