How not to break your back in the garden: simple tricks when working – and at least dance in the garden

A torn back is the result of work in the country at the end of the season. Summer residents do not spare their health in an effort to grow a rich harvest. Meanwhile, then you have to be treated by a neurologist for a whole year to restore your back and start the summer season again in the spring. It turns out to be some kind of vicious circle. However, you can break it if you learn how to work in the garden correctly. Osteopathic doctor Dmitry Simkin told how to move in the garden to minimize the load on your back.

Here is what advice the doctor gave to summer residents in a conversation with aif.ru (18+):

  • use a special back belt, such as a bandage or corset. It tightens the stomach, unloading the spine. It is better to use not a knitted belt, but a special orthopedic one;
  • When digging, try not to bend too much, that is, your back should not “curl up.” The spine should only tilt slightly and remain in a slight deflection;
  • lift the shovel with the ground, not with your back, but with your front leg. That is, bend it, and straighten it when lifting the shovel. Be sure to alternate hands while digging;
  • for weeding and loosening the beds, use a low bench or take a position on all fours with support on one hand;
  • During the entire time you are working in the garden, straighten up and stretch more often.

Also, take breaks from work as often as possible. The optimal regime is 40–50 minutes of work and 10–15 minutes of rest, during which you must get up, straighten up, stretch and walk a little.
