Can an algorithm decide to attack a school? Experts warn that the world is now crossing the line beyond which humans cease to control the war machine – reports “Rzeczpospolita”.

UN talks on fully autonomous weapons took place in Geneva. According to Nicole Van Rooijen, executive director of the Stop Killer Robot initiative, quoted by Rz, without binding international law, the gap between the capabilities of these systems and our ability to manage them is widening every year. The expert warns that the price of the military use of artificial intelligence will be paid by “civilians in conflict zones and citizens of authoritarian and democratic countries, who will have to face these inhuman technologies when their use becomes the norm and human rights are undermined.”
Although it has not yet been officially confirmed, according to experts, the attack on a girls' school in Minab, Iran, is likely the result of an attack by AI.
As Rz's interlocutor Kaja Kowalczewska from the University of Wrocław, an AI Law Tech expert, warns, AI may lead to an escalation of the extent of damage and the number of victims of armed conflicts.
Already, autonomous weapons systems are used in the Middle East and Ukraine. They independently track and attack targets, which – as Marta Stępniak, an expert at the Institute of Civil Affairs, points out in an interview with “Rz” – leads to the dehumanization of the decision-making process.
